Strategic: This allows me to sort through the clutter and find the best route, a skill that cannot be taught. It is a distinct and special perspective on the world at large. This allows me to see patterns instead of complexity. I am always asking, “What if this happened? Okay, well what if this happened?” This helps me to see around the next corner and evaluate potential obstacles. Guided by where I see each path leading, I am able to discard the paths that lead nowhere and paths that lead straight into resistance or confusion. Armed with my strategy, I strike forward.
Communication: I LOVE to explain, to describe, to host, to speak in public (occasionally), and to write (welcome to my blog). Ideas can be so dry and events are static. Much like my own life, I feel a need to bring them to life, to energize them, to make them exciting and vivid. I turn events into stories and practice telling them. I take the dry idea and enliven it with images, examples and metaphors. I understand that most people have a very short attention span. Everyday we are bombarded by information, but very little of it survives. I want my information, big or small, to survive. I appreciate undivided attention and that drives me to pick my words to create the perfect phrase. I find myself drawn towards dramatic words and powerful word combinations. My words are selected to pique their interest, sharpen their world, and inspire them to act.
Empathy: I pride myself in my ability to sense the emotions of others. I am able to see the world through their eyes and share their perspective. I find myself saying, “I understand” often and actually meaning it. I do not necessarily agree with each person’s perspective or feel pity for each person’s predicament. I do not necessarily condone the choices each person makes, but you do understand. I sense the unvoiced questions. When others struggle for words, I am able to take a minute but usually find the right words and the right tone. I help people find the right phrases to express their feelings. I help people give voice to their emotions and thoughts.
Ideation: I am fascinated by ideas. I am delighted when I discover the concept to explain why things are the way they are and the process it takes to get there. An idea is a connection and my mind is always looking for connections. An idea is a new perspective on familiar challenges. I enjoy taking the world we all know and turning it around so we can view it from a new and beautiful angle. I love ideas because they are profound, novel, clarifying, contrary and bizarre. I derive a jolt of energy whenever a new idea occurs. Ideas are thrilling.
Adaptability: I don’t see the future as a fixed destination. Instead, it’s a place that is created out of the choices I make. I do have future plans. Adaptability enables me to respond willingly to the demands of the moment even if I have to stray from my plans. I don’t resent sudden requests or unforeseen detours because they’re expected. Secretly on some level I actually look forward to them because I am a very flexible person who can stay productive when the demands of work are pulling me in many different directions at once.
